Overall thoughts: Double elimination tonight! Wasn’t
expecting that :/ They also dedicated the show to Mia Michaels which I think is
pretty sweet. It was interesting to have old routines re-imagined. I have not
seen any of the originals so I did not struggle with separating the
performances the way the judges did. However, I missed not knowing the story
behind them so for many of the performances it was just a dance to me.
Opening Performance: WOW.
That was intense. I loved the use of the ropes to allow to climb and fly. It
also felt like a professional performance. I forgot that they were the
contestants for a moment. The emotion and chemistry between the dancers was
also incredible.
Pairing #1: Eliana (ballet) + Cyrus (animator)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: They liked it—thought it was a great way
to start the show. Cyrus really brought something new to the routine and Eliana
was incredibly strong. Nigel thought she should have kicked Cyrus through the
door instead and Mary called it “swaggerocious.”
My thoughts: Whew. I liked it. They were very committed to the steps
and portrayed the characters well. Cyrus is really coming along as dancer. And Eliana just continues to be gorgeous.
Paring # 2: Tiffany (jazz)
+ George (contemporary)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: The loved it. Mary claimed they murdered
the routine. They had fantastic energy but they all agreed that they were a bit
too much into the character so they lost a bit of the connection with each
other some. Still thought it was a great routine.
My thoughts: Very pretty and well done routine. But it didn’t really
get at me or anything/make me want to vote for them.
Paring #3: Amelia (contemporary) + Will (contemporary)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: Mary and Nigel thought that they danced
it well but the character was not as strong as it could have been. Billy liked
it and had no complaints over it.
My thoughts: I love seeing Amelia’s hair as teased out—it’s really cute
like that. That was a fun and strong routine. I think they both were fantastic
in it.
Paring #4 : Janelle (bellydancing) + Dareian
(contemporary)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: Judges weren’t over the top with it. They
felt it was almost a solo piece for Dareian. Nigel thought that Janelle got
lost a bit in the choreography. They also felt the level of raw emotion was
missing in comparison to the original.
My thoughts: Before they started, I thought to myself, this could be a game changer for them.
Wow, they did not disappoint. I haven’t’ been the biggest fan of this
partnership this season but oh my goodness they embraced the story and were
fully in it. I was very impressed.
Paring #5 : Audrey (jazz) + Matthew (contemporary)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: They were very impressed with Audrey but
felt Matthew wasn’t as strong. I felt Nigel put it best: they are beautiful
dancers but they story of a father being reunited with his daughter just wasn’t
there.
My
thoughts: When I heard the story I thought I was going to start crying. The routine
felt a bit short, but they danced it beautiful. I don’t think the connection
was quite right. It felt like something was missing although they were still
very good.
Paring #6 : Witney (ballroom) & Chehon (ballet)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: This was the first
routine that they seemed genuinely impressed with. Nigel shared the original story
with us, which I wish they had done with all
of the dances. Mary called it hypnotic and claimed they pulled it off. Michael offered Chehon a job so that was
pretty cool. And Witney was fearless in her dancing.
My thoughts: Brilliant—their chemistry
and partnership is SO good! I wish I knew more of the story but this was the
first time I didn’t need it. I just loved the performance for what it was.
Paring # 7: Lindsay (ballroom) + Cole (martial
arts fusion)
Dance Style Chosen: Contemporary
Judges thoughts: Judges and I were on the same page
here! Billy complimented them on their versatility as dances. Nigel and
Mary were overwhelmed with them. They both talked about how well they made the
choreography their own and handled the challenge the best out of all the
dancers. Cole was destructive, psychotic, and chilling. And Lindsay, goodness-
she was fantastic. It was the best performance of the night.
My thoughts: Wow this routine TOOK
MY BREATH AWAY. I don’t know the story and I don’t care. It felt like a similar
thread to the last routine they performed to and I remember feeling some doubt
with their commitment and performance. Throw that away. My goodness they were
so into what they were doing and it was brilliant. Love love love.
Elimination
Bottom three girls: Amelia, Janelle,
Lindsay
Bottom three guys: George, Dareian, Matthew
I don’t want to have pick between Amelia and
Lindsay!! I LOVE both of them. NOT FAIR. They both deserve to be in the top 10.
As for the boys, I would save Matthew if I
could.
I definitely don’t envy the judges at all.
The judges saved Lindsay & George and I
understand their reasoning. Super bummed that Amelia is out. Love her.
I thought it was an incredibly sweet moment
after the show when all the dancers were on stage and the judges walked over to
speak to them. You could tell that they were just as broken up about who was
going home.
Now we have our top 10:
And next week they are bringing back the all-stars!!
